Summary
An indie game available forNintendo 3DScalledFragrant Storyhas recently received a free expansion called Papaya’s Path, which players can download right now. This3DS hidden gemis a short isometric tactical RPG and was among the last titles to be released for Nintendo’s handheld.
There is no lack ofexcellent strategy games on 3DS, but this game stands out due to being launched at the very end of the platform’s lifecycle. Released by William Kage from Squire Games in 2022,Fragrant Storyoriginally received somewhat positive reviews from gamers. While some players liked the gameplay and the characters, the main complaint was thatFragrant Storywas too short, and could be finished in a single day. Hopefully, this issue will be fixed with the expansion.

Fragrant Storyis receiving a fully free DLC called Papaya’s Path, which was released on July 18, 2025. The new expansion for the3DSgame will be significantly larger than the original story, adding more content all around. According to the creator ofFragrant Story, the free DLC will bring new challenges, battles, more abilities and equipment, new enemies, bosses, and a significantly expanded soundtrack. Also, all main characters will be voiced, something the game did not have previously. Like before, the gamers will explore the kingdom of Flowergard together with Princess Papaya LeGuava Magnolia, as well as her companions, and engage in turn-based battles that seem inspired by titles likeFinal Fantasy Tactics.
At the moment,Fragrant Storycan only be acquired directly via the official website. Players can either decide to download the DLC for free or purchase the physical edition. The normal version of the physical edition costs $30 (with some special editions costing more), and all the money will be donated to charity, according to the creator. That’s expected, asthe 3DS eShop closed downearlier this year, in what was one of the most controversial decisions made by Nintendo recently.
Unfortunately, whileFragrant Storyis still giving content to its fan base, this is not a very good time for people who still play their 3DS regularly. Nintendo recently announced that theonline services for 3DS and Wii will shut down in 2024. According to the company, these services will be kept working until spring 2024 but will be fully discontinued after that. While this will not prevent players from downloading the games they already own, they won’t be able to play online with others anymore. Nintendo at least confirmed that downloads of purchased products will still be available for the foreseeable future.
3DS
The Nintendo 3DS was the next console in line for the company’s DS line and introduced a special 3D slider that allowed players to activate an overlayed 3D effect to certain titles, without the need for 3D glasses. It was introduced in the eighth-generation and went against the Sony Vita.
