WhilePokemon Legends: Arceushas been busy reinventing the proverbialPokemonwheel as well as dominating Switch sales, Game Freak has apparently been working onPokemon Scarlet and Violet, which will be the next two entries and markPokemon’s 9th generation of games. Not only havePokemon Scarlet and Violetbeen announced, but they have also been confirmed for release later this year, rounding out a year that has so far redefined thePokemongaming experience.
Along with the announcement that the games are coming later this year,Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s starters were revealedas well, and many believe them to be 3 of the cutest starters in franchise history. The starters are Sprigatito, perfectly described as a grass cat Pokemon; Fuecoco, a fire crocodile that many believe looks a lot like an apple; and Quaxly, the duckling Pokemon who sports a head of hair that some fans have been directly comparing toJojo’s Bizarre Adventurecharacter Josuke.

As is typical with the reveal of new starters, the information spread across the internet like wildfire. Fans immediately took to social media to talk about the starters as well as say which they’ll be picking when the games launch. Also, although it has only been a few days since the announcements, already fans are coming up withpotentialPokemon Scarlet and Violetstarter evolution fanart.
Along with art of potential evolutions, some fans are creating different versions of the starters themselves. In the same vein as the fanart ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Quaxly with other duck Pokemon, Reddit user shunixe decided to reimagine Quaxly in an incredibly similar, but much “floofier,” form, adding to the already large amount of cuteness fans felt towards the duck Pokemon. The art piece heavily focuses on the eyes, hair, feathers, and feet of Quaxly, rendering the Pokemon in amazing detail.
However, shunixe didn’t stop there, and decided to do a similar piece for the grass cat starter Sprigatito. Like Quaxly’s floofier design, shunixe focused on making Sprigatito cuter and fluffier, adding detail to its eyes and hair. Many fans stated the piece was so great that it tipped the scales in Sprigatito’s favor, saying they would choose the grass cat as their starter. Indeed, while there has been much love for Quaxly and Fuecoco, fans like the one who created a generation 5sprite animation forPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Sprigatitoare keeping the grass type in the spotlight as well.
While the games create plenty of hype on their own, fans and artists like shunixe help to bringPokemoninto the public eye as well; It serves to bring thePokemoncommunity closer together as well as create conversation around the games. Also, with one fan doing the same by creatingart of all 3Pokemon Scarlet and VioletStarters, hopefully it is only a matter of time before Fuecoco is added to shunixe’s collection of cute pieces.
Pokemon ScarletandVioletare scheduled to release in late 2022 for the Nintendo Switch.
