Summary

Though the studio has been around for decades, during the 2000s Bethesda cemented itself as a king of RPGs in the Western world, delivering hit after hit. WhileThe Elder Scrolls 3:Morrowindbrought the fantasy franchise to consoles for the first time,Oblivioncemented it as a new juggernaut ofthe fantasy genre. With these successes, Bethesda decided to try and do the same forFallout.

Originally an isometric turn-based RPG, Bethesda acquired theFalloutfranchise in 2007 following Interplay’s bankruptcy in 2004, and proceeded to usher in a brand new age for the post-apocalyptic franchise. Turning the franchise into a 3D open-world RPG, Bethesda raisedFalloutto new heights, and while the series has had its fair share of misses over the last few years, it remains one of Bethesda’s most popular IPs.

Bethesda Should Be Pushing Fallout At All Times

Bethesda Should Be Capitalizing on Amazon’s Upcoming Fallout Show

Right now, Bethesda has no plans to release anyFalloutgames soon, at least any plans that have been officially announced. WithFalloutbeing one of Bethesda’s most recognizable and reliable IPs, it seems a little bewildering that the developer/publisher doesn’t want to capitalize on the franchise as much as humanly possible. For instance, Bethesda is seemingly about to let a major opportunity just pass it by withAmazon’sFalloutshowright around the corner.

Set to air on July 02, 2025, Amazon’sFalloutshow looks as though it’s shaping up to be a genuinely impressive video game adaptation. Not adapting any of the game’s specific storylines,Falloutseems to be putting its world-building and characters at the forefront, which seems incredibly fitting foraFalloutadaptation. Being such a high-budget, high-profile streaming release, it seems likely that Amazon’sFalloutwill bring in plenty of newcomers to the franchise, many of whom will have never played any of the games before. But rather than seize this opportunity, Bethesda is just letting it pass by completely.

While they received plenty of controversy upon their announcement and eventual release, the two most recentLast of Usremakes/remastersare a great example of a developer trying to capitalize on the franchise, ensuring that newcomers who have watched the recent live-action adaptation have an up-to-date version of the video game series ready to play straight away. While Bethesda might not want to follow in Naughty Dog’s footsteps directly with this, full remakes ofFallout 3andFallout: New Vegashave been heavily requested and it would make a lot of sense for Bethesda to have something to release alongside Amazon’s show.

Bethesda Shouldn’t Be Worried About Letting Another Studio Helm Fallout

But even if Bethesda didn’t care about capitalizing on the release of Amazon’sFalloutshow, it shouldn’t just let the franchise remain dormant until it eventually gets around to releasingFallout 5. Currently, based on what Bethesda’s Todd Howard has mentioned during interviews from last year,Fallout 5may not be seen until 2030 at the earliest, with it being the studio’snext project afterElder Scrolls 6. So, in theory, for the next six years at the very least, Bethesda is going to letFalloutjust fade into the background.

But it doesn’t need to be that way. While it makes complete sense that Bethesda would want to keep one of its most popular IPs close to its chest, it shouldn’t be afraid to just let other developers have a go at the license.Fallout: New Vegasis still widely considered to be one of, if notthe best game in theFalloutfranchise, and another spinoff, hopefully from Obsidian, would be the perfect thing to bridge the gap between mainlineFalloutreleases.
