AlthoughCyberpunk 2077is already pretty stunning to look at, the newly released Ray Tracing Overdrive Mode gives it that extra bit of visual acuity, but it looks as though this upgrade is struggling to run even on high-end PCs. Despite the initial controversy when the game released at the end of 2020, CD Projekt Red’s dystopian sci-fi title has become one of thebest western RPGs in terms of character development, with patches helping to fix some major problems that plagued the game when it launched.WithCyberpunk 2077’sPhantom LibertyDLCcoming out at some point, many will be keen to jump back into the exploits of Night City. After more than two years, a lot of fans are happy with the current state of the game. Evidently, CDPR is still looking to keepCyberpunkin everyone’s good books with plenty of updates and new content, but a recent graphical upgrade is causing problems on some people’s systems.RELATED:Cyberpunk 2077 1.62 Update Patch Notes RevealedAs reported by The Gamer, the new RT Overdrive Mode forCyberpunk 2077is a lot more of a resource hog than most would like. In a recent tweet from the YouTube channel Hardware Unboxed, a clip shows the game’s new visual upgrade had been switched on, but when the player comes out of the menu, the game can be seen running at an extremely low framerate. The accompanying post says they were using an AMD Ryzen Zen 4 with an iGPU for graphics processing that supports Nvidia’s ray tracing technology. An additional tweet says that the footage has also not been compressed, with the low quality image from the game being a representation of how it actually looks. The new mode itself is intended to offer greater visual fidelity that works similarly to ray tracing. However, while ray tracing tracks lights, shadows, and reflections, RT Overdrive uses path tracing, which simulates light throughout an entire scene.

To go along with Hardware Unboxed’s tweets,Reddit user Daniiiiii111 uploaded an imagefrom their playthrough, showing how the new ray tracing feature has corrupted the general visuals of the game. Some may not actually be surprised by how hardware heavy the new mode is. Many expectedCyberpunk 2077’s RT Overdrive Mode to be resource hungry, with the graphical update even putting a strain on Nvidia’s newest RTX 4000 series graphics cards. Hopefully, there will be a fix for this, but if more people experience poor framerates and glitches, it won’t be good news for owners of high-end systems.

Currently,CD Projekt Red is involved in a number of projects, including a remake of the originalWitchergame and a follow-up toCyberpunk 2077. It’s a shame that some are having problems running the sci-fi RPG with the new RT mode turn on, and it could undo the repair the developer has been working so hard on given the game’s early reputation.

Cyberpunk 2077is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
