Summary
Bungie has officially delayedDestiny 2’sThe Final Shapeexpansion from Jun 15, 2025 to June 17, 2025.The Final Shapeis poised to wrap up the currentDestiny 2storyline that started nearly a decade ago. It’s meant to usher in a new era forDestiny 2, dumping the seasonal model that the game has used for years in favor of an episodic approach that will change how the looter-shooter handles its storytelling.
It goes without saying thatThe Final Shapeis going to be massive forDestiny 2, and so it’s no surprise that many fans of Bungie’s looter-shooter are excited to play it for themselves. Initially, fans wereexpecting to jump intoThe Final Shapein February 2024, continuing the February release pattern for expansions that started whenThe Witch Queenwas delayed from late 2021 to early 2022, but now we know that will no longer be the case.

Amid theBungie layoffs, it was rumored thatDestiny 2would be pushing backThe Final Shapeexpansion’s release date, and now fans have official confirmation from the studio. The previously-leakedFinal Shaperelease date delay has now been confirmed, meaning fans won’t get to play until Jul 23, 2025. Bungie stated that the delay will allow the team “to deliver an even bigger and bolder vision.” It also addressed how this is going to impact the game’s ongoing content plans, as it suddenly finds itself with a 4-month gap to fill.
When is the Destiny 2: The Final Shape Release Date?
Basically, fans can expect an extra-longSeason of the Wish. The original plan was forDestiny 2’s Season of the Wish to wrap up whenThe Final Shapelaunched in February, but now it’s been extended to the expansion’s launch date in June. Bungie has said that the “majority” of the content and narrative for Season of the Wish will still end in February, but new content is planned to help fill in the time between then andThe Final Shape’s June 2024 launch.
Destiny 2 2024 Plans
According to Bungie, this extra content will include new weekly quests called Wishes and Moments of Triumph “with unique rewards.” Come March, Bungie is bringing back theGuardian Gamesearly to help keep the playerbase engaged, while April will kick off two months of content calledDestiny 2: Into the Light"which will prepare players for their Guardian’s journey into the Traveler," though otherwise details are scarce on what exactly that will entail. April will also see Bungie give a big update onThe Final Shape, revealing new gameplay for the expansion and more.Destiny 2PvP players, meanwhile, will be happy to learn that three new PvP maps are coming to the game in May.
Time will tell if this will be enough to keepDestiny 2fans satisfied.Destiny 2’s player count has been down lately, and having an extra-long Season of the Wish could potentially drive even more fans away. However, it’s safe to say that many Guardians will be making their return to the game to see how the story concludes withThe Final Shapewhen it finally launches on June 08, 2025.
