Dragon Ball Z: Kakarotconfirms that its upcoming fifth DLC will feature both a brand-new playable character and gameplay feature. This new character is going to be the Crane School’s top student, Tien Shinhan, one of Goku’s early rivals from the originalDragon Ballseries. Considering thisDLC will be focused on the 23rd World Martial Arts tournament- the final arc ofDragon Ballbefore it transitioned intoDragon Ball Z- it features all the battles that the heroes will come across before the tournament’s final confrontation with Piccolo. As such, the DLC will be focused on replicating the tournament itself in a few different ways in gameplay and roster.
BeforeDragon Ballgradually phased out the human characters, one of the characters Goku had a rivalry with was Tien, the three-eyed Crane School student who beat him in the previous tournament after a grueling fight. This fight also managed to turn Tien from a villain to a hero, who would become an ally to him and the Z-Fighters later in life. However, the 23rd World Tournament also closed the book on his old Crane School life, where he is confronted by the former hitman Tao Pai Pai. Players will be able to relive his battle against the cyborg assassin inKakarot’s fifth DLC.

This can be seen in the screenshots provided by Bandai Namco, who show off both Tao and Tien stepping onto the tournament stage. It also shows a screenshot where Tien is using his signature attack, the Tri-Beam. Other screenshots of Goku and Piccolo’s final bout show off some new moves, such as Goku’s foot-based Kamehameha. Many fans were glad to see Tien be confirmed as a playable character, with many believing he is a ratheroverlooked character in comparison to the likes of Vegeta and Piccolo.
Another tweet showed off a new feature that is a part ofDragon Ball Z: Kakarot’s fifth DLC, Ground Battles. As the name implies, these are fights that take place exclusively on the ground. These ground battles play with some slightly different rules too. According to the tweet, players can get knocked out or kick their opponents out of the ring for an instant victory, or have to keep them down for a ten count in order to win. If a player gets knocked down, they’ll need to play a small mini-game to get back up.
This change makes sense, as this was when the series was still focusing on the martial arts and hand-to-hand fighting beforeDragon Ball Z’s escalating stakesmade each battle bigger and grander. There’s currently no release date set for this DLC yet, but these new details have gotten fans excited to re-experience this climacticDragon Ballarc again.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarotis available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
