After numerous years of turmoil, fans ofSilent Hillhas have gained a new excitement over what might be next for the franchise. AsSilent Hillfans are buzzing thanks to franchise revival rumors, it seems some are using the enthusiasm to make inspired projects. While some developers are creating entirely new games to embraceSilent Hill’s beloved psychological horror,Fallout 4modders have opted for a different approach.
Over five years since initially launching,Fallout 4continues to get support from the modding community. While many mods are focused on makingFallout 4a better technical experience, there are some willing to experiment with the post-nuclear RPG in unique ways. Released on popular mod hosting website Nexus Mods, the first episode of the giant mod introduces a new location to Fallout 4’s “The Commonwealth.” The new settlement is dubbed “Whispering Hills” and shares a similarly quaint name as the town that it is based on. Described as a “Silent Hilloverhaul,” the mod goes beyond just slapping on a thick fog with addedSilent Hillsound effects. Going through the description, it displays a great level of care and love for a franchise that has remained dormant. The release of Whispering Hills Episode 1 is accompanied by a trailer showing just how well the mod merges the two games.
With this only being the release of Whispering Hills: Episode 1, players will have to keep waiting for the full experience. Right now, players will only get a small piece of the town as they explore the Midwitch Elementary School that was in the originalSilent Hill. With each new episode, another piece ofSilent Hillwill be incorporated into Whispering Hills. As players explore the town, reality will never quite be a given as they will move in and out of the otherworld where theiconic monsters of theSilent Hillseries will make an appearance.
While giant mods have been made forFallout 4before, Whispering Hills is definitely one of the most ambitious. Wheremods likeFallout: New Vegas' “New California” and “The Frontier"have expanded theFalloutexperience to new locations, Whispering Hills seeks to reinventFallout 4into a genre it sparsely dabbles in through specific quests. With no newSilent Hillon the way anytime soon, the team behind Whispering Hills wants to pay homage to developer Team Silent’s terrifying atmosphere.
The mod is available for download now on Nexus Mods with install instructions urging the use of the mod manager. While there are stillmany rumors swirling about newSilent Hillprojects, Whispering Hills Episode 1 can serve as a great appetizer from dedicated fans. With more episodes set to come toFallout 4, it’ll be a great way of aiding the wait for an official announcement.
Fallout 4is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
