Final Fantasy 14producer and director Naoki Yoshida teases fans on the possibility of crossover content for the MMO based on the upcomingFinal Fantasy 16. The long-running MMO has been going on for nearly a decade now, releasing several expansions and updates that have all earned critical and commercial acclaim. It’s no secret thatFinal Fantasy 14has a fiercely loyal fanbase, especially in regard to its current director and producer, Naoki Yoshida, who is attributed to the game’s ongoing success.
With Yoshida being so beloved fans, many were also glad to see him come on board asthe director ofFinal Fantasy 16, with much of the game taking aspects of his previous works while re-interpreting several classicFinal Fantasystaples, giving it a much more nuanced and mature story that is comparable toFinal Fantasy 14’s plots. With the sixteenth entry in the long-running franchise coming out later this summer, the director of both games teased its potential inclusion in the MMO.

This potential expansion was commented on at a recent Q&A session held with the director at the annual gaming convention PAX East, which was also streamed on Twitch. These comments from the producer were prompted by a fan who asked if otherFinal Fantasygames might appear in the MMO in some shape or form. Yoshida, through his translator, stated that withFinal Fantasy 16coming out soon, it’d be a nice option to look into. It would likely be a safe bet in terms of inspiration, as bothFF14andFF16were overseen by Yoshida, though this wasn’t a hard confirmation.
Yoshida also teasedFinal Fantasyfans about what other games he’d like to pursue in making crossover content for, such asFinal Fantasy 2, along withFinal Fantasy 9. He even notes thatthe upcomingFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthalso is a candidate for a potential collaboration, once all the teams have released all the parts. The biggest reaction that he got from the crowd in terms of teasing potential content was also the potential of visiting the setting ofFinal Fantasy 11, Vana’diel, but then moved on to the next question without further elaboration.
Final Fantasy 14crossover contentis not uncommon, hosting a wide variety of cameo appearances and references. This includes events that saw the worlds ofMonster Hunter,Yokai Watch, and evenNier Automatahaving cosmetics or bosses that originated from these games. TheNier Automataone in particular had a storyline that tied into the plot of14, being led by series creator Yoko Taro. The potential forFinal Fantasy 14to have a tie-in with the upcomingFinal Fantasy16would be a great way to take advantage of its hype.
