Back in 2005, Square Enix released a movie sequel to its hit RPGFinal Fantasy 7, titledFinal Fantasy 7: Advent Children. While it garnered a mixed reception at the time and even some die-hard fans will admit it’s not without some glaring issues, it was praised for boasting groundbreaking visuals for the era and it has quite a substantial legacy, even influencingSephiroth’s reveal forSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.
For all its foibles, it remains an iconic piece ofFinal Fantasy 7’s history, which is likely why Square Enix is releasing a remastered version ofAdvent Childrenin 4K Ultra HD. Announced earlier today, it’s technically a re-release ofFinal Fantasy 7: Advent Children Complete, which itself was a Blu-Ray re-release director’s cut from 2009 that included new and expanded scenes. Square Enix states that this release will not only have 26 minutes of extra footage but also over 1000 revised scenes, and fans will be able to check it out starting June 8.

It will come with two discs. The first one, the 4K Ultra HD disc, includes the movie remastered in 4K and all-new English and Japanese Dolby Atmos audio tracks, plus English and Japanese 5.1 audio. The second one, a Blu-Ray disc, also contains the movie, just in HD, as well as a bunch of special features. Namely, trailers, aLegacy ofFinal Fantasy 7featurette, aReminiscence of Final Fantasy 7 Original Story Digest, aReminiscence of Final Fantasy 7 Compilation Story Digest(which sound like story recaps of the original game and other entries in the series like prequel gameCrisis Core), andOn the Way to a Smile – Episode: Denzel,a short OVA about one of the new characters introduced in the movie.
For those unfamiliar withAdvent Children’s plot, it takes place two years after the original game and seesmain hero Cloudhaving to foil a new plot concocted by a trio of villains that hold some connection to his arch-enemy Sephiroth. What’s more, several people, including Cloud, have developed a mysterious illness called Geostigma and there is no known cure.
This isn’t the only way Square Enix is bringing the movie back, though. Aside from the remake seeming to incorporate some aspects from the movie, its mobile title,Ever Crisis, is being advertised as an adaptation of the entireFinal Fantasy 7storyline, which will includeAdvent Children. How it will cover the events of the movie is unknown at this point and fans likely won’t find out for a while, as it’s not due to release until 2022 and will start off with a re-telling of the original game.
