With little more than an official trailer to go off,Grand Theft Auto 6fans have been rabidly speculating about what the game’s story will look like. There’s a good chance thatGTA 6’sBonnie and Clydeinspired narrativewill be at the forefront of the experience, in contrast to the relatively pared-down story ofGTA 5. That said, there was one dramaticGTA 5plot development that may make a return, at least in spirit.

One of the most widely circulatedGTA 6story theories revolves around the boyfriend character (who leaks refer to as Jason): it’s been speculated that he is either an undercover or rogue police officer. This hasn’t been touched on by Rockstar or any other official sources, but it seems plausible, considering the story’s apparent focus on trust, a theme that punctuates the reveal trailer. Another key piece of evidence supporting this theory is the brief shot of police body cam footage, which some have suggested could be from Jason’s perspective. Admittedly, the evidence supporting the idea is a bit lean for now, but the narrative setup would make sense and has the potential to be quite compelling.

Bringing Back GTA 5’s Multi-Ending Structure In GTA 6

GTA 5 Makes Players Define Their Loyalty in the Finale

ThoughGTA Onlineestablishes a canon endingforGTA 5, the base game’s story branches off into one of three directions just before the finale. The three options hinge on a decision that the players make as Franklin, who is being coerced by both Devin Weston and the FIB. The three options are as follows:

GTA 5’s ending is the culmination of each character’s ambition and poor decision-making. Over the course of the game, the main trio goes further down a path of danger and destruction, getting into bed with groups that don’t have their best interests in mind. The three choices represent the pitfalls of these mistakes. This concept could be polished anddeepened inGTA 6, which might be even better suited to this sort of finale.

GTA Onlinecanonization aside, mostGTA 5players would consider Deathwish to be the canon ending, as there’s no real incentive to kill Michael or Trevor. This could be different inGTA 6’s approach to player choice, though.

A Cop Plot Would Be a Natural Fit for a GTA 5-Style Ending

GTA 6could recapture the essence ofGTA 5’s choice-based ending, assuming the cop theory turns out to be true. Whether Jason is an undercover, corrupt, or rogue cop, he might be torn between his law enforcement role and his romantic relationship with Lucia, which could culminate in an explosive and deadly finale. IfGTA 6’s story is equally focused on Jasonand Lucia, then players could have a choice to make as the plot reaches its climax: side with Lucia and kill Jason, arrest or kill Lucia as Jason, or defy all the odds and rebel against both the police system and whatever crime syndicate Lucia is connected with, resulting in both partners making it out alive.

This would serve as a natural and meaningful elevation of the choices presented at the end ofGTA 5. Both characters would be pressured by outside forces, but the conflict would be much more personal, as Jason and Lucia would naturally have a closer relationship than, say, Franklin and Trevor.GTA 6’s focus on trustcould also lead to more key choices throughout the game that impact the ending, similar toRed Dead Redemption 2’s Honor system. Obviously, this idea is pinned on a fairly unsubstantiated theory, but it would be a reasonable and exciting path for the game’s story to take.
