In 2013,Grand Theft Auto Onlinelaunched on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before being made available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014 and PC in 2015. The base game,Grand Theft Auto 5, is typically listed as the second best-selling video game of all time, behind onlyMinecraft.Despite being released nearly nine years ago,Grand Theft Auto Onlinecontinues to maintain a dedicated player base that continues to find new quirks to this day.

WhenGrand Theft Auto Onlinefirst launched it was very similar to the online modes featured inRed Dead RedemptionandGrand Theft Auto 4. As time went on, the developer continued to add new modes, new DLC, and in-game purchases.Grand Theft Auto Onlineheists went live in 2015, and Rockstar had added new settings for players to rob and cause general mayhem. For some gamers, however, it’s the little interactions with NPCs that make the game worth it.

SinceGrand Theft Auto Onlinelaunched, players have seen NPCs act in unexpected ways. The core open-world gameplay is virtually the same as the offline mode, where gamers can easily kill or rob NPCs, but they sometimes fight back. In one instance, aGrand Theft Auto OnlineNPC stole a player’s helicopterfrom them right before another NPC stole it from the original thief. In a recent post, Reddit user Vexentiv shared an interesting encounter they had where an NPC attacked them and another came to their defense.

Unexpected NPC interactions like this are not uncommon in the game. For example, oneNPC snapped on a player during the Diamond Casino heistand made off with the player’s bus. In this instance, the new video starts where the player character has apparently killed and robbed a handful of NPCs. They then run to a group of nearby NPCs and bump into several of them. One then starts attacking Vexentiv before another NPC intervenes, attacking the attacker. The second NPC then beats the original attacker to death as the player watches.

With the addition of online in-game purchases,Grand Theft Auto 5is often listed as one of, if not the highest-grossing single piece of entertainment media ever made. In the nearly nine years since the game launched, it has been reported that the game’s online components have earned over $6 billion worldwide. Development of further content will likely begin to slow down as Rockstar pivots towardsGrand Theft Auto 6’s production, but content like theCriminal Enterprisesupdateindicates that the company isn’t quite finished with the game. Hopefully, this will mean that players will get enough bizarre and unexpected encounters with NPCs like this for years to come.

Grand Theft Auto 5is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
