Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxywas a bit of a surprise hit for many fans when it released last year. Following the release and less-than-idealreception forMarvel’s Avengersand some questionable showcases for this game, there were many doubting this video game iteration ofGuardians of the Galaxy. It proved many wrong, though, releasing to strong reviews and telling an emotional, weighty story throughout some fun, frenetic gameplay.
The relationship among the characters was another stand-out, really adding some real-life complexities to Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, Groot, and Mantis. Whether that is dealing withDrax’s tragic backstoryor understanding Rocket’s fears, it all made the player truly feel like the leader amongst a gang of misfits in Guardians of the Galaxy. One seemingly random aspect that still added a lot to this is the fridge that would never close, and senior creative director Jean-Francois Dugas recently explained the origins of this joke.

For context, players can travel around the Milano several times throughoutMarvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. There’s a fridge door (seen above) that is opened every time they approach it, and the players are prompted to close it. Yet, no matter how often they close it, the door opens once more. How it was broken or why it won’t close properly, as well as why it was never fixed, isn’t explained. Players are just left closing the door over and over in-game.
Dugas discussed this ongoing gag in a recent interview with GamesRadar. According to Dugas, the inspiration from the joke comes from two American sitcoms:Modern FamilyandIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The former features Phil Dunphy constantly stumbling on house stairs he never fixed, and in one episode of the latter, “Charlies pass by a stool in the bar where he works many times during the episode, and each time, he replaces/shakes the stool before going to his next objective.” Dugas continues that “this reasoning behind it never gets justified, but it is just so funny. So, based on that, I started to how the fridge door would be an endless joke that would never get resolved.”
Indeed, for many people who playedGuardians of the Galaxy, that’s exactly what the fridge door represents. For no reason, they may continuously shut the door to the fridge. Or, intrue Guardian fashion, they may just embrace the chaos and leave the door open. The fact that it’s just an endless joke that goes nowhere really adds to the character and spirit behindMarvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxyis out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
