While James Gunn is gearing up for theGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3release, fans are focused on one of his upcoming DC projects. Recently, Gunn took to social media to update on theCreature Commandosrelease date. The Creature Commandos is a team of military superhumans created by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick for DC Comics. So far, it appears that theDC Universeshow’s team will have no overlap with the modern team from the comics; themembers of the Creature Commandos teamin the show include Rick Flag Sr., Eric Frankenstein, the Bride, Dr. Nina Mazursky, G.I. Robot, Dr. Phosphorus, and Weasel.RELATED:DC: 10 Strongest Creature Commando Characters In The ComicsAs it’s the first project in Gunn’s official DCU canon, interest has erupted aroundCreature Commandos, and fans have eagerly devoured every update Gunn has given. Luckily, he’s just handed them another. Recently, a fan responded to a picture Gunn posted on Twitter of someGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3castmembers wearing shirts with his face on them to inquire about the release date forCreature Commandos. “Is Creature Commandos coming out in 2024?” asked @Guardians_Hype. Gunn responded with one word: “Yes.” While no specific date was given, this update means that Gunn’s DCU will officially begin in 2024.
When Gunn took over DC Studios with his co-head Peter Safran, he made it clear he wanted to create a continuity that worked across different formats, from movies to TV shows to games. While the majority of his plans remain a mystery, fans have known for some time that Gunn is planning to make a Superman movie witha new actor playing Superman. Gunn has also said that a new Batman will be cast as part of the DCU continuity, even as Robert Pattinson’s Batman returns inThe Batman 2.
While it doesn’t give fans much to work with, there’s plenty of room to speculate about specifics following Gunn’s confirmation thatCreature Commandoswill hit HBO Max in 2024. With the last official DCEU movie releasing at the end of 2023 -Aquaman 2- and the first DCU movie set to release in July 2025 -Superman: Legacy- it would make sense forCreature Commandosto release later in 2024 to provide breathing room between the DCEU ending and the DCU beginning, and to release closer to Gunn’s DCU’s theatrical debut. While nothing is set in stone, a smart bet would be thatCreature Commandospremieres in the fall of 2024, before or afterTodd Phillips’Joker 2releases in theaters.
