James Gunn’s Superman Movie Could Pave The Way for a Mister Terrific Game

DC’s Mister Terrific Explained

Created by writer John Ostrander and artist Tom Mandrake, Michael Holt made his debut appearance in 1997 during theSpectrerun of comics. Unlike the DC superheroes he surrounds himself with, Michael Holt technically has no superpowers, though he does have a genius-level intellect that allows him to learn and master just about any skill or profession. After his wife and unborn child tragically die in an accident, Holt thinks about taking his own life, but he’s interrupted by The Spectre, who tells Holt aboutthe Golden Age hero known as Mister Terrific.

Seeing a new purpose in life,Michael Holt becomes the modern-day Mister Terrific, where he uses his genius-level intellect for good. Though his abilities change from comic to comic, Mister Terrific is often portrayed as one of the smartest men on the planet. Mister Terrific has a particular penchant for technology, creating the highly advanced T-Spheres that can often be seen floating around him.

These T-Spheres can be used to hack tech, emit an incapacitating burst of electrical energy, and as a way to carry Mister Terrific through the air. These T-Spheres are controlled by Mister Terrific’s T-shaped mask, which is actually a sheet of nanotech fibers that are biologically bonded to his skin. Though the breadth of his role hasn’t been confirmed yet, Mister Terrific is set to appear inJames Gunn’sSuperman, where he’ll be played by Edi Gathegi.

A Mister Terrific Game Has One Inherent Advantage

Back when James Gunn was announcing the new DCU slate, he mentioned that somefuture DC video gamescould tie in with the new universe’s canon. With Mister Terrific appearing inSuperman, there’s a great opportunity there for a video game adaptation to flesh out the lesser-known DC hero in a bit more detail, and deliver a refreshing superhero gaming experience at the same time.

While Mister Terrific has a playful rivalry with Batman in the comics, his skill set is different from the Caped Crusader’s, which means a video game adaptation would offer something distinct fromtheBatman: Arkhamseries. Though Mister Terrific’s martial arts training could be used as the basis for combat in a video game, his T-Spheres should be the main gameplay gimmick on display. A Mister Terrific video game would also have a major advantage in that he’s never had a solo game of his own before, meaning that there’d be virtually no expectations beforehand, which would hopefully allow the game to surprise fans.

Superman

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.' rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”
