Jordan Peele has officially marked his return to the director’s chair. Peele, who began frightening audiences in 2017, has finally released the name of his newest horror creation, which will be released byUniversal Picturesnext year.
In late 2020, it was revealed thatPeele’s next film was set to premierein 2022. While a few members of the cast have been named, details regarding the film have been kept tight-lipped. However, today Peele took to Twitter to unveilNopeas the name of his upcoming film. His announcement was accompanied by the film’s first poster, teasing a first look at what the horror film will have in store.

In 2017, Peele left many speechless with his directorial debut,Get Out. The film went on to be nominated for four Academy Awards in 2018, taking home the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Two years after his directorial debut, Peele returned to theaters with his stunning horror film,Us. It was previously announced thatNopewill featureAcademy Award-winner Daniel Kaluuya, Academy Award-nominee Steven Yeun, and Keke Palmer.Nopewill be Kaluuya and Peele’s second time working together. The two previously collaborated onGet Out, which earned Kaluuya an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
Nope’s plot is unclear at this time, but the brewing storm on the poster suggests that whatever is coming, it won’t be good for the cast. The poster features a cloudy sky with an isolated dark cloud and what appears to be a kite string emitting from it. Below, is some sort of festival in a field near the mountains. If the brightly lit buildings are some sort of celebration, it wouldn’t be Peele’s first use of a festival to strike fear. During the opening ofUs, a child wanders into a funhouse on the beach, unknowingly coming in contact with what is revealed as the tethered version of herself. Of course, clowns, dolls, and other traditionally childish entities have become increasingly popular in horror productions. Pennywise, Annabelle, and Chucky are all examples of this.
The natural, isolated setting echoes the location of Ari Aster’sMidsommar. While Peele and Aster are both known for playing more than a few mind games,Nopeis likely to be different from anything Peele has done before.Get OutandUstested the minds of moviegoers and with the cast Peele has acquired,Nopewill be no different.
Peele’snext release will beCandyman, which he helped produce and write. As an adaption of the already terrifying story, with Peele’s touch,Candymanwill frighten viewers in a way they’ve never been before.
