A massiveDestiny 2leak has revealed the origins of the game’s main antagonist, The Witness. This comes via an in-game cutscene that is making rounds on social media, which answers some of the biggest questions fans have regardingDestiny 2’s biggest villain.
Over the years,Destiny’s story has been centered around the idea of Light vs. Darkness, where the latter is portrayed as the evil force in its fictional universe that seeks to reshape reality. However, this evil entity had no face or character that was the living embodiment of Darkness, untilThe Witness was finally introduced at the end of The Witch Queen DLC’s campaign. Now a leaked cutscene has seemingly provided answers to all the questions players have about The Witness.

Major spoilers ahead for Destiny 2 Season of the Deep and The Final ShapeAfter The Witness,Destiny 2Lightfall introduced a mysterious object known as The Veil, which was something The Witness sought. Now this leaked cutscene seemingly explains what its true purpose is and what The Witness plans to do with it. Considering this was possibly meant to be revealed towards the end of Season of the Deep, this is a major spoiler which could reveal more about the current season and possibly The Final Shape DLC as well, so fans should proceed with caution.The cutscene beginsby explaining how The Traveler has existed for eons and came to the rescue of an ancient civilization that was struggling for survival. The people of that civilization referred to The Traveler as the Gardener, which is a direct reference to aShadowkeeplorebook that references the Gardener and the Winnower. This is also mentioned in the video that proves that a previous theory aboutDestiny’s overarching story concept is somewhat true and that the fans were on the right track in their attempts to decrypt Bungie’s creation.
It explains how the people of the civilization sought purpose and meaning, that The Traveler failed to provide them with, which is when they came across The Veil.Studying The Veil further helped the civilization understand the Darkness, which was a “power shaped by thought and consciousness.” However, the Darkness showed them a way to “calcify existence” into a Final Shape, which is something The Traveler wouldn’t allow and eventually chose to flee when the people brought The Veil to communicate with it. With The Traveler gone, the civilization chose to use the power of the Darkness, and merged themselves into a single being of their salvation, which gave birth to The Witness.
While leaks are generally frowned upon, several fans have called it one of the bestDestiny 2cutscenes of all time, even though it possibly spoils the rest of the season. However, this provides valuable insight into what The Witness’s endgame is and what the Guardians will have to do to stop them inDestiny 2The Final Shape DLC.
