Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios made a major announcement Friday morning regardingMortal Kombat 11. Releasing on November 17 will beMortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, what’s described as the definitiveMortal Kombat 11experience. Not only willMortal Kombat 11 Ultimatefeature a variety of new content, including new fighters, but alongside it will be a freeMortal Kombat 11upgrade for next-generation consoles. And yes, NetherRealm’s confirmed free upgrades for both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Next-gen upgrades for games already available on current generation consoles has become a controversial topic in recent months. Games includingMarvel’s Spider-ManandControlare being made available on either PS5 or Xbox Series X, but will have to be rebought to get their next-gen updates. NetherRealm isn’t following that path, instead deciding to preserve the game’s community regardless of which platform they buyMortal Kombat 11for.

In a press release, Warner Bros. Games breaks down exactly what kind of next-generation updatesMortal Kombat 11players will get if they upgrade to a next-generation console. Both thePS5 and Xbox Series X and Swill offer 4K dynamic resolution forMortal Kombat 11. Additionally, the game will have enhanced visuals, improved loading times, and cross-generation console compatibility for select modes.

Regarding that last feature, cross-generation console compatibility effectively means crossplay regardless of the player’s console.Mortal Kombat 11’s “Krossplay Support” includes PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, Xbox One, and both Xbox Series X and S. Do note that it’s limited to select modes which haven’t been specified as of yet.Crossplay was previously offered for PS4 and Xbox One, soUltimate’s launch will just be expanding it to the newly launched consoles. Previously, crossplay could be turned off with a toggle, so it should be toggleable going forward, too.

Keep in mind that the free upgrades for next-generation consoles and crossplay will be available to allMortal Kombat 11playersregardless of whether they purchase theUltimateupgrade. However, they’ll have to wait for Ultimate to launch before the features go live. The feature will also be available for all players regardless of when or how they bought the game, so newMortal Kombat 11PS4 buyers will still get the upgrade even after November 17.

TheMortal Kombat 11 Ultimatebundle will featureMortal Kombat 11, Kombat Pack 1, theAftermathexpansion, as well as the new Kombat Pack 2. Kombat Pack 2 adds the highly anticipatedMileena, Rain, and a Sylvester Stallone-voiced Rambo. The standaloneMortal Kombat 11 Ultimatepackage retails for $59.99, whileMortal Kombat 11owners can pick up Kombat Pack 2 for $14.99.
