Plenty of eyes are on the sequel to 2018’sGod of War, both because of its exciting Ragnarok setting as well as just how tight-lipped Santa Monica has been on the project. According to originalGod of Wardirector David Jaffe, though, a cross-gen release seems plausible.
Purely speculation, the director of thefirst twoGod of Wargamessaid that “I am sure the new God of War will be PS4 [and] PS5,” adding that “Jim Ryan has pretty much said as much.” Referring to several interviews where the PlayStation CEO refused to comment on theGod of Warsequel’s cross-gen status, despite claiming that the PS4 will continue to be supported, Jaffe’s educated guess makes perfect sense.

While Jaffe could certainly be right about hisprediction forGod of War Ragnarok, it is worth noting that it is just a prediction. For some reason, gamers and various news outlets began to consider Jaffe’s comments official confirmation of the sequel’s cross-gen status — despite Jaffe having no information whatsoever on the project. Shortly after the news broke, Jaffe took to Twitter to reiterate that he has no insider info and was just “stating his opinion” regarding the likelihood of cross-gen. Adding that it is “not [his] place to reveal any GOW info,” Jaffe was quick to shut down the rumors.
Still, Jaffe doubles down on his stance in the tweet, saying that “of course”God of Warwill be cross-gen. Despite having “zero knowledge” on the game and Sony’s plans (or lack thereof) for a PS4 release, the creator of theGod of Warfranchise remains confident the game will be on both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Aside from Ryan’s comments that exclusive games will be cross-gen for the next few years, and theupcomingHorizon Forbidden Westbeing released on both consoles serves as further proof that a PS4 version ofGod of War Ragnarokis likely.
Though Jaffe could certainly be right, nothing is official until Sony makes a statement regarding the game’s platforms. Purely a fan like everyone else, Jaffe’s comments during his stream ofGod of Warshould only be viewed as an opinion from someone familiar with the industry and how it works. With great moments taking place in hisGod of War2018 playthrough, such asJaffe’s reaction to the Blades of Chaosreturning at the game’s midway point, the game developer’s take on the cross-gen situation is hardly the only thing worth talking about from the fun stream.
With players also in the dark regarding an officialGod of War Ragnarokrelease date, hopefully Santa Monica will get the ball rolling regarding some official news soon. For now, players can only guess as to when the game will arrive — and what platforms it will be on when it does.
