Summary

Overwatch 2is no stranger to referencing other forms of media. VariousOverwatch 2sprays reference major moments in pop culture, while heroes offer unofficial nods to other forms of media within their various skin lineups, like Moira having David Bowie-inspired outfits. Maps feature Easter eggs, too, like Eichenwalde’sDark SoulsBonfire and the entirety of Blizzard World, while voice lines for the heroes reference everything fromGame of Thronesto Star Wars. With official collaborations likeOne Punch Manjoining the list, it would not be surprising if Blizzard included a few tributes toDeep Rock Galacticin its hero shooter.

For those unfamiliar with Ghost Ship Games’ charming co-op game,Deep Rock Galacticsees players controlling dwarves as they descend onto the planet Hoxxes to mine for resources. With a surprising amount of depth for each class, solid customization, and an excellent sense of humor, many have fallen in love with the game - so much so that “For Karl” and “Rock and Stone” will be found in the comments whenever mining is mentioned in some form. To both get ahead of these jokes and pay homage to Ghost Ship Games’ cult classic, Blizzard should either crossover withDeep Rock Galacticor add some cute references to the title when Venture debuts inOverwatch 2.

Venture and Deep Rock Galactic Are an Ideal Pairing

Overwatch 2’s Venture Could Get a Wide Range of Deep Rock Galactic Cosmetics

The most obvious opportunity for aDeep Rock GalacticVenture cosmetic, and the one that is the most likely to come to fruition, is voice lines for Venture. They could deliver any of the iconic lines from the game, saying “we mine for Rock and Stone” or “Leaf Lover” whenever players trigger the line of dialogue. While this would inevitably get spammed due to the prevalence ofDeep Rock Galacticmemes on the internet, that could turn out to be more funny than anything else, similar toDoomfist’s “And They Say…" voice line spam.

WhileDeep Rock Galacticskins seem a bit less likely for Venture given the wildly different art styles, perhaps they could be given the bulky yellow outfit of the Driller or the Scout’s simple blue gear. Weapon skins are easier to imagine, asVenture’s guncould keep its same functionality but be reworked to look like the Shard Diffractor, Breach Cutter, and so on. Victory Poses mimicking the end of match Victory Moves fromDeep Rock Galacticcould work well, as could a highlight intro where Venture holds up a pickaxe and says Rock and Stone. Sprays and souvenirs referencing the series are also viable options.

Overwatch 2 Tag Page Cover Art

OfficialDeep Rock Galacticcontent would not have to be limited to just the Dwarves, as the Glyphid and Mactera aliens are also quite recognizable. Glyphids in particular would make some neat charms forOverwatch 2’s weapons, with a lootbug guaranteed to be a cute option.

Overwatch 2’s Venture Could Get Their Own Map With a Deep Rock Easter Egg

In the past,Overwatch 2has created maps based on certain heroes, such as Ecopoint: Antarctica for Mei. This continued with the Samoa map that recently released as part of Season 7, as it was used to hype up the debut ofMauga in Season 8. Perhaps Blizzard will use a similar trick ahead of Venture’s release, dropping a map that allows players to explore the mines where they work in Season 9. Not only would an underground map be a nice change forOverwatch 2, as it would stand out from other maps, but it could be the perfect home for aDeep Rock Galacticreference. A grave for Karl, a dead Glyphid, minerals like Morkite - the possibilities for fun Easter eggs are extensive.
