APokemon TCGfan used digital re-creation techniques to create a 3D lenticular poster of the original three starter Pokemon, as they were depicted in the Base Set during its Western release in 1998. The fan then posted their work on Reddit, where it received plenty of upvotes and praise for their dedication and attention to detail with theirPokemon TCGtribute.
Though manychanges have come to thePokemon TCGsince its inception, the dedication that players have to their favorite Pokemon and favorite cards has not wavered over the years. From the original base set to the upcomingPokemon Scarlet and Violetseries of cards coming in 2023, thePokemon TCGhas remained at the forefront of many players and collectors for over two decades. This in turn has led to the creation of many tributes to special cards of old that have since fallen out of favor in competitive play but still hold some value.

A Redditor by the name of Wizyakuza posted their 3D lenticular poster that featured the base set versions of Blastoise, Venusaur, and Charizard. According to Wizyakuza, the poster was made using interwoven sheets of plastic that had the images of the threePokemoncards that they wanted to combine into the poster. As a result, the image then changed when lit hits the poster at different angles. As shown in an 8-second video by Wizyakuza, the card changed from Blastoise to Venusaur to Charizard when the poster was moved toward and away from the camera in a well-lit room. While it is different from other art methods,such as AI image generation used to extend card artwork, Wizyakuza’s craft was praised by other Reddit users for bringing back memories and for how accurate each card was to the source material.
The post received over 8k upvotes in just over a day on r/gaming, and other users asked Wizyakuzahow valuable the poster could becompared to the actual cards they were based on. Though the cards have long since been retired from competitive play, the value of olderPokemon TCGsets and cards has remained a constant source of speculation and price fluctuation, especially the coveted first edition runs of the base set’s Charizard card.
Though the Pokemon TCG will enter a new era in 2023, the post by Wizyakuza is a great tribute to cap offa good 2022 for thePokemon TCG. With plenty of new cards to collect, and old ones to look back on, the future remains bright for thePokemonfranchise as a whole.
