Summary

A pair of artistically talentedPokemonfans have created impressive, prehistorically-themed Paradox forms for two classic Ground-type creatures: Cubone and Rhydon. Paradox forms were introduced in 2022’sPokemon Scarlet and Violet, and represent what certain breeds of Pokemon look like in either the ancient past or far-off future. Just like the regional Pokemon variants added in past games, these Paradox forms alter their given Pokemon’s appearanceand elemental abilities, adding even more Pokemon for players to collect and train on their journey through the European-inspired Paldea region.

Naturally, the more artistically inclined members of thePokemonfandom have designed their own Paradox forms for Pokemon that don’t have one yet, offering up new takes on many of the franchise’s most recognized creatures. These fanmade Paradox forms range from Dark-themed variants of original Generation 1 Bug-type Scyther to an even more terrifying version of thealready creepyScarlet and Violetcreature Hydreigon. Some fans have even created brand-new Paradox Pokemon like “Iron Justice,” a fusion of the three so-called Swords of Justice Pokemon that were first seen inPokemon Black and White.

Now two talented Reddit users are sharing their own custom Paradox Pokemon designs, inspired by some of the 150 creatures introduced in the originalPokemongames. The first comes from 32RabbitTeeth in the form of Paradox Cubone, a triceratops-inspired take on the cute and tragic Ground-type Lonely Pokemon. This version of Cubone walks on four legs, and its skull-like mask, usually a sad keepsake ofits deceased Marowak mother, is given two long horns and a large ridge on top. Other users have tried to come up with a name for this new Paradox Cubone, with one of the more notable suggestions being “Sorrowed Skull.”

Meanwhile, another Reddit user by the handle of El-psy-congroo-01 recently posted artwork of “Frigid Spear,” a past Paradox form ofPokemon’s dinosaur-like Ground/Rock hybrid Rhydon. This new version replaced Rhydon’s Rock element with Ice, and transforms its drill-like horn into a longer, sharpened icicle. El-psy-congroo-01 even designed two alternate versions of Frigid Spear, a normal greyish-blue iteration and a light-brown Shiny variant. Both were commissioned for aPokemonfan project called “Pokemon Legends: Rayquaza,” which is said to be inspired by 2022’sPokemon Legends: Arceus.

Whether it’s for a fan-made passion project or just a fun display of an artist’s talent, thePokemonfranchise has ignited the imaginations of gamers for almost three decades through impressive redesigns of popular creatures. This has only increased with the advent ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Paradox forms, which have vast untapped potential for new takes on the 1,025 pre-existing members of Nintendo’s ever-growing monster collection. These Paradox versions of Cubone and Rhydon are but two examples of this, and they offer up some interesting prehistoric looks for these two classic Pokemon.
