Nintendo and Game Freak continue to reveal more Pokemon that will be part of the new generation ushered in withPokemon Scarlet and Violet, with each quickly garnering their own following. Many fans have already taken to the few Pokemon introduced with the June 1Pokemon Scarlet and Violettrailer, including one artist that has given three of them an old-school makeover.

Twitter user Emimonserrate recently posted fan art of Lechonk, Pawmi, and Smoliv, which were all introduced with thePokemon Scarlet and Violettrailerreleased on June 1. ManyPokemonfans are debating which of the three is their new likely party member, while others continue to ponder on their expected evolutions or what Pokemon haven’t been revealed yet. Regardless, Emimonserrate’s fan art shows the three fresh Pokedex entries as small old-school pixel Pokemon that look like they could appear inPokemon Ruby and Sapphire.

Emimonserrate’s threePokemon Scarlet and Violetsprites use color combinations that would be possible on the Game Boy Advance, shining a retro let on theGen 9 Pokemon. Smoliv is frowning while leaning forward in a tackling position, and Lechonk is the central Pokemon of the fan art. Lechonk has a standard stance with a coiled tail poking out from the back, and Pawmi is as low to the ground as possible, with its tuft of fur sinking further than its tail like a cat that’s ready to pounce. Just like inPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s second trailer, the three Pokemon show their unique personality in the graphically limited Emimonserrate sprite redesigns.

Pokemondemakes have become a common staple of thePokemonfan artcommunity, as some members lament that the 2D sprites have given way to 3D models in recent generations. Emimonserrate’s fan art shows howPokemon Scarlet and VioletPokemon may appear with an old-school twist, though it’s unlikely that Nintendo will return to the simpler 2D setting. Some fan-madePokemontitles likePokemon Uraniumhave featured this old aesthetic, but officialPokemongames from the Nintendo Switch to mobile offer modern graphics.

Though much of thePokemoncommunity has taken to Lechonk as the Gen 9 Bidoof equivalent,Pokemon Scarlet and Violetfans have expressed enthusiasm for each of Emimonserrate’s sprites. ManyPokemon Scarlet and Violetfans responding to Emimonserrate’s fan art lament that Lechonk, Smoliv, and Pawmi aren’tstarter Pokemondespite the fact that none of them have been confirmed as exclusive toScarletorViolet. While Fuecoco, Quaxly, and Sprigatito are left out with Emimonserrate’s 2D sprites, each of them has been the center ofPokemonfan art since thePokemon Scarlet and Violetreveal trailer was released.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violetrelease for Nintendo Switch on November 18.
