The first trailer forResident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon Cityhas officially arrived and dedicated fans of the series have already noticed a number of clear nods to the survival horror franchise’s storied past. Not only is the film meant to adapt the events of bothResident EvilandResident Evil 2, but it also connects the Raccoon City outbreak to some iconic characters fromResident Evil Code: Veronicaand brings the tragic Lisa Trevor back in what seems to be a bigger role. However, one fan quickly spotted another easter egg planted in the trailer for sharp-eyed gamers to notice.

In the originalResident Evilgame, players found themselves exploring the isolated Spencer Mansion, located several miles into the mountains on the outskirts of Raccoon City. This remote location is well known for being filled withiconicResident Evilmonsters, but it also featured some striking interior decor. Redditor ChrisAvenue_ spotted one painting in particular that appears to have been carefully recreated in the movie trailer.

The painting ChrisAvenue_ drew attention to can be found in the 2002 remaster ofResident Evil. It is located in the dining hall and shows two knights in the middle of a swordfight, captured with their swords apparently run through each other’s bodies. TheResident Evilseries' lorehas always been filled with stories of revenge and self-destruction, which may be reflected in this painting. The image was important enough that the film crew decided to include it in the firstResident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon Citytrailer, where it can be spotted on the wall behind Chris Redfield as he advances deeper into the mansion.

Gamers may notice a few differences between the game and movie versions of the painting, primarily in its presentation. Although the game shows the picture hung neatly on the wall, the movie shows it resting at a sharp angle, as though it has been knocked ajar–or is just about ready to fall down. The caution Chris Redfield shows around the painting could suggest that it’s thematically linked to one ofResident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City’s villains.
