Ghost Trick: Phantom Detectivehas been rated in South Korea, indicating that a remaster is on the way. While he’s likely more known for his work on theAce Attorneyseries, most recently last year’sThe Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, Capcom’s Shu Takumi released another beloved Nintendo DS cult classic namedGhost Trick: Phantom Detectivein 2010 that looks like it might be making a comeback.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detectivewas first released in Japan in June 2010 before arriving in North America and Europe in January 2011. The game is a puzzle based adventure game that, as previously mentioned, was written, designed, anddirected byAce Attorneycreator Shu Takumiafter he departed from the main series following 2007’sApollo Justice: Ace Attorney. WhileGhost Trick: Phantom Detectivewas praised upon release for its gripping narrative and memorable puzzles that made great use of the Nintendo DS’s hardware, the game was not a commercial success, much like laterAce Attorneygames, and did not receive a sequel or anything outside of an iOS port in 2012. Now, it appears thatCapcom may be preparing forGhost Trick’s return, as Gematsu has spotted a Korean ratings board listing for the game that indicates an upcoming multi-platform re-release.
Whilelast year’sThe Great Ace Attorney Chronicleswas not a major hit, the sales of the game and 2019’sPhoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogymight have convinced Capcom that bringing back its beloved Nintendo DS back catalog, particularly from Shu Takumi, has some surprising financial results. It begs the question of how the developer will adaptGhost Trick’s use of the Nintendo DS’s hardware to modern platforms, given that the game makes great use of the dual-screens and touch screen functionality of the hardware. Perhaps this port might only make it to PC and Nintendo Switch, or it could even be a full remake of the DS classic, reinterpreted for modern hardware.
Either way,Ghost Trick’s imminent return is definitely something worth exciting fans of Capcom’s adventure games, or even just fans of the genre in general. This reveal is just another example ofCapcom dipping into its back catalogand reviving a property or title that fans have already become very acquainted with, such as how it has done forThe Great Ace Attorney,Ghosts n' Goblins,Mega Man, andOnimushain recent years.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detectiveis available now on Nintendo DS and iOS.
