With both expansive fantasy and sci-fi settings, theWarhammeruniverses have plenty of potential for videogame studios. From top-down strategy games that let players controlepic fantasy battles likeTotal War: Warhammer 3, to third-person hack and slash games that let a player wade through endless hordes of Orks likeWarhammer 40,000: Space Marine, there’s a lot of opportunities forWarhammervideo games. These prove especially popular to those who want to experience theWarhammersetting without spending a large amount of money on the wargame.
WithTotal War Warhammer 3having released to a positive reception last month, and a newSpace Marinetitle announced at the 2021 Game Awards, there are some bigWarhammergames coming soon, with some already having been released. It doesn’t seem like the news on and releases ofWarhammertitles will be stopping anytime soon though, as a recent copyright filing by SEGA may indicate there will be another uniqueWarhammergame on the horizon.

SEGA is the company that publishes all theWarhammervideogames, after the gaming giant purchased Relic from THQ. Since this purchase took place, theWarhammervideogames were seen by many as being in safe hands, and considering the recent history of the franchise’s games, that claim at least holds some truth. Now, it seems SEGA may be looking to expand one ofWarhammer’smost popular videogame franchises, with an arcadeDawn of Wargame.
TheDawn of Warseriesis a collection of real-time strategy games that were seen by many as a real-time version of theWarhammer 40kwargame. Though the third entry in theDawn of Warfranchise was met with poor critical reception,Dawn of War 2and its expansions are still held in high esteem by the franchise. SEGA’s copyright filing could indicate that a newDawn of Wararcade title could be on the way, specifically referencing a “Rising Tau”.
There was a Tau commander in theDawn of War 2: Retributionexpansion, though the Tau are aWarhammerrace that rarely feature in the videogames of the franchise, though there has been one game focusing on the sci-fi race, entitledTau: Fire Warrior. In this new game, SEGA could either be looking to make an arcade game focused primarily on the Tau, or something similar to theDawn of Warseries featuring a Tau protagonist, rather than the Space Marines fans of the franchise are so used to. So far, there’s next to no news on the upcoming title, though it would fit nicely with the otherupcoming40kgames likeDarktideand the aforementionedSpace Marine 2.
