Liu gavePeoplean interview, discussing his MCU career and future. Speaking about being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and what he described as a possible team-up in the works, Liu said, “I’m such a big fan of both the characters and the performers that play them, so any collaboration is an opportunity for me to work alongside someone who, in their own way, is breaking barriers and at the very top of their game. I think that’s what excites me the most as a performer, and also as a fan.” In general, Liu’s admiration for his co-stars and the MCU is well known, as hecame to their defense against industry icon Quentin Tarantino. When speaking about Shang-Chi’s next appearance, Liu added, “Who knows? They might see something sooner than you think. We’ll see.”

Liu seems to hint at something juicy with that last part, which comes from the star at a time when rumors suggesting thata Shang-Chi sequel has already been added to the MCU’s slatehave picked up a lot of steam. While little else is known at this time, the sequel film is set to be led by returning director Destin Daniel Cretton, whom Marvel Cinematic Universe boss Kevin Feige described as “an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill toShang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” Feige also mentioned that Cretton had a lot of ideas for the films and content for the Disney Plus streaming service, implying a possible small-screen role for Liu’s Shang-Chi could be on the table as well.

Cretton will direct the nextAvengersmovie, which could mean a new infusion of more martial combat in the film, and could hold the answer to Liu’s cryptic allusion to a team-up with his fellow Marvel stars. Also allegedly being added to the slate is a sequel to Marvel Studios’Eternals,a group with whom Shang-Chi seems to share a connection, one that fans are fascinated with. Additionally, several MCU projects might feature Shang-Chi, ensuring that fans of the character can’t miss a single release in the next phase.

While the thought of potential team-ups and more of that electrifying martial arts technique is appealing, Liu’s next performance will only carry the appeal of his first appearance if the MCU can solve its superhero fatigue issue, a problem thatKevin Feige might not have the right approach to fixing. When and how the character will appear next and how invested fans will be at that point will have to be judged when the time finally does arrive.
