The Game Boy’s library contributed to its longevity, from spawning blockbuster series likePokemonto hosting accessories like 1998’sGame Boy Camera, which was recently brought into the 21st century with a mount that makes it compatible with DSLR lenses.

This 3D-printed mount design, uploaded to Thingiverse by user Herr_Zatacke on May 4, replaces the eyeball-shaped lens of theGame Boy Cameracartridge with a cone that connects to modern, digital lenses for more acute images. YouTube channel 3D Printor used this mod with a 70-200mm lens in a video uploaded August 18, which it says allowed the application to capture, “Some creamy retro photos at an insane 0.1 megapixels.”

Because they were unable to acquire the Game Boy Printer device that accompanied Nintendo’sGame Boy Camera, 3D Printor had the image it captured printed onto canvas so it could be hung up on the wall, and the results are impressive considering how old the technology is. Then again, even though the Game Boy and Game Boy Color have been discontinued for nearly two decades, anew Game Boy title calledPOWA!is being releasedthis November, so the handheld has not been entirely lost to history.

TheGame Boy Cameraaccessory has also retained relevancy in the age of digital cameras andsmartphones with throwback Game Boy casesthanks to individuals who have taken advantage of its aesthetic quality. It has been used to create an art gallery of photos around New York City, and one astronomy student has used it to capture images of the Moon through a telescope, according to a 2018 article by AV Club.

While the camera is a more unique part of the Game Boy’s history, fans of the old-school handheld have taken on projects surrounding its main library of games as well. Last year, someoneremadeNew Super Mario Landfor the SNESusing sprites fromNew Super Mario Bros.on the Nintendo DS.

The design of the Game Boy itself has also been used in various projects over the years. One Polish fan of the device made aspecial-edition Game Boy concept based onCyberpunk 2077. With the popularity of this retro console, it makes perfect sense to see theGame Boy Cameraupdated for use with modern-day tech.
