Summary

In a quiet and sudden move, Sony changed thePS5packaging to no longer include the 8K resolution label on the front of the box and social media users noticed the move. Though Sony has not stated why the change was made toPS5packages, some fans debated why such a change was made.

During the PS5’s launch in 2020, Sony stated that the PS5 would output up to 8K resolution on compatible displays in a console firmware update, depending on the content available. This claim was also made by Microsoft during the Xbox Series X launch in 2020. While one title,The Touryst, can be played in 8K resolution, no other PS5 games have claimed 8K support. Although the PS5 has HDMI 2.1 support, which includes compatibility with 8K displays, that has not stopped game developers from creating titles that can run up to 4K resolution with varying frame rates. While 8K displays remain expensive,4K TVs for the PS5are widely available.

Even though the PS5 listed8K support would arrive in a firmware update, recent changes made to the console’s package indicate that may no longer be the case. A Reddit user named Roklobster1 started a thread on the r/gamingnews subreddit that showed Sony’s quiet removal of 8K support from the PS5 console packaging. Roklobster1 then shared two pictures as proof of their claim. The first image showed the 8K branding in gold lettering, while the second image indicated that the logo had been removed. The two remaining labels on the top right of the PS5 packaging indicate support for 4K 120hz displays and high dynamic range (HDR).

Sony Removes 8K Label From PS5 Slim Packaging

On thePlayStation Directsales page for the PS5 Slim, the 8K logo from all available versions and bundles is absent, which leads credence to Roklobster1’s claim. In the comments, some users debated why Sony would remove the 8K logo from PS5 packages. One user claimed Sony engaged in false advertising by putting the 8K label on the box of PS5 consoles when the feature was not supported out of the box. Other users speculated that Sony could add 8K resolution as a feature of thePS5 Pro system, while some made jokes about the situation.

At the time of writing, Sony has not publicly commented on the removal of 8K labeling on PS5 packages. While PS5 users debate the changes made tothe PS5 Slimboxes, what Sony will do for future console labels remains to be seen.
