Summary

Even after theStar Warscanon was reset nearly a decade ago, stories from before that time still come up as fans fondly remember them with wistful nostalgia. One such story is from the 2003 role-playing video gameStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which continues to linger in the hearts of many to this day. It looks like those hearts may include folks in charge at Lucasfilm.

The love forKnights of the Old Republicburns bright 20 years later, and it’s not difficult to see why. This game from Western RPG powerhouse BioWare (along with its sequelKnights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lordsdeveloped by Obsidian Entertainment) provided one of the most in-depth looks at theStar Warsuniverse at the time, allowing players to immerse themselves intimately in that world. From its focus on player’s choice to its iconic story twist that still resonates with fans today, it’s no mystery whyKOTORremains one of the most requestedStar Wars-related properties to get more love one of these days.

Fortunately, a rumor from a prolific movie news leaker may provide some hope. News scooperMyTimeToShineHellorecently posted an interesting tweet debunking past rumors of aKOTORtrilogy of movies in the works. But she wasn’t just here to harsh anyone’s vibe. She also provided some hope for the future. “There was NEVER aKnights of the Old Republiclive action trilogy of movies planned despite reports,” she explained. “They considered aKOTORproject of some kind for years but it was never in active development. However, pre-strikes they finally started to put one into gears. They’ll keep working on it post-strikes.”

So despite numerous projects going on the back burner now during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in Hollywood, it’s possible that aKOTORmovie, show, or another sort of production had begun work before and may open up again if/when the folks in charge decide to start treating the writers and actors with the respect (and money) they deserve. This could be huge news if it’s true, as a continuation of theKOTORstory from those two beloved games has been on many gamers' wishlists sinceKOTOR IIwas released in 2004. Aside from being considered among thebestStar Warsgames to this day, the writing and themes continue to linger in the minds of those who played them.

Despite sporadic news regarding an upcomingKnights of the Old Republicremake, the world set up in the beloved classic game remains largely untouched by the currentStar Warscanon. The closest thing right now is the still marginally popularStar Wars: The Old Republicmassively-multiplayer online game, which is set in a similar timeline long before the events of the original films. Upcoming projects in the High Republic era (roughly 50-350 years before the original trilogy as opposed to the several thousand-year gaps of the Old Republic era) are close but not quite the same to many fans.

Some sayKnights of the Old Republic 3would never work. In that case, a movie or series may be the ideal next step for this particular story. Sometimes, a little shake-up is all that’s needed. MyTimeToShineHello’s claim should be taken with a grain of salt, but she has a pretty well-proven track record. So a little optimism wouldn’t be all that out of place. Here’s hoping the rumor ends up true, as this is oneStar Warsfandom that’s been hungry for far too long.
