Very few actors have gotten their feet wet in both the Marvel and DC cinematic universes, and there may be a good reason for that. With all arguments surrounding which one is better by fans everywhere, actors assuredly would be asked which one they would prefer. Luckily, that sentiment didn’t phaseThe Batmanstar Andy Serkis, who has appeared in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Cinematic Universe.

WithThe Batmanhaving been released in theaters just a couple of days back, and Serkis playing the iconicrole of Alfred the butler, he was of course asked which universe he prefers between Marvel and DC. Luckily Serkis answered in a way that assured both fanbases that he enjoyed participating in both Marvel and DC for their own unique reasons.

“I love both worlds because I love the brightness and boldness of Marvel stories. They’re all mythologies,” Serkis said during his appearance onThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “And I do like the darkness of DC… For our generation, they touch on real human emotions, on real-world events. They are great allegories for our time.” Colbert later insinuated that they are like fairy stories much like J.R.R. Tolkien stories, which Serkis, who of course is best known for his work as Gollum in the live-action adaptation of Tolkien’sreveredLord of the Ringsbooks, certainly agreed with.

Factoring in both Serkis' repertoire as an actor, and the positive reception that both theMarvel and DC moviesthat he participated in received, this answer should have come as no surprise. Serkis has never been an actor who mailed in a performance, and part of why those movies work was because of, to some extent, his acting chops. Even if he wasn’t the biggest name involved in any of those movies, his thoughts on both franchises demonstrate that the roles he played in them clearly mattered to him.

Serkis' response to the question also begs the question, “Why does it always have to be one or the other?” in this case. There’s honestly nothing wrong with enjoying both movie franchises for what they do without having to set a clear preference. Both theMarvel and DC cinematic universeshave enjoyably qualities in their own ways, so there’s no tangible reason why fans can’t like both of them for their unique styles.

Although, it wouldn’t be surprising if Serkis is more heavily involved in the DC cinematic universe seeing as how he is playing a much, muchmore well-known character in comic book lore than the one he played in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For all fans know, Serkis' thoughts on the franchise may change if he is involved in more DC projects. For all fans know, they didn’t get the whole story when Serkis made his appearance on Colbert. Whatever the case is, let’s just be glad fans got to see such a revered actor do his part for two of the most popular movie franchises in Hollywood.
