Despite the world ofPokemonrevolving around competitive and often fierce trainer battles, this doesn’t meanthe many regionsare only comprised of battle-hardened veterans and aspiring Gym leaders. In fact, most trainers are ordinary people we would see very often in our real lives, such as romantic couples for example. Couples have always been present inPokemongames, despite the fact that romance isn’t typically something the series tends to focus on.

However, while many players are usually hyper-focused on collecting Gym badges and growing their team, taking the time to chat or even battle with two lovebirds can help to bring a sense of realism and relatability to this amazing world.While some couples, especially in the older games, will provide a quick and easy battle for the player to overcome, there are a few others throughout the games who have been much more memorable, whether it’s for their unique and quirky appearance, their relevance to the story, or even their difficult encounters.
8Landon & Yuriko (Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon)
Interestingly, Landon and Yuriko cannot be found in the regular versions ofPokemon Sun and Moonand were purposefully added by GameFreak in the Ultra versions where they will battle players with their deadly Vulpix duo in the beautiful Malie Garden.
This addition may have simply been to make the area a little more difficult, especially considering that their Pokemon are much higher leveled compared to the other trainers in the area. While they don’t have much dialogue to share, they more than make up for it with their extremely challenging encounter which can easily throw beginner players off their game if they underestimate these two.
7Lois & Hal (Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire)
The gigantic abandoned ship on Route 108 inPokemon Ruby and Sapphirehas become an isolated battle arena for many trainers, and one couple who have taken the time to improve their teamwork in this wreckage is Lois and Hal. Players can get an idea of how smitten these two young lovers are bylooking them up on the PokeNavinPokemon Omega Ruby and Ultra Sapphire, with their trainer message simply saying “We’re lovey-dovey! We’ll be lovey-dovey forever!”
Many fans have pointed out how the couple is most probably a reference to the popular showMalcolm in the Middle,which itselfreferencedPokemona lot during its early seasons, making the characters very popular among both fanbases.
6Old Couple John & Jay (Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire)
According to the PokeNav, John and Jay have been married for over 50 years, but when looking at their karate gi and headbands on the battle screen, it’s clear that they’ve spent most of that time training in unison to create a formidable team that is guaranteed to push the player’s squad to the limit.

Because they are nestled away in the second room of Meteor Falls inPokemon Ruby and Sapphire, they can actually be quite easy to miss, but all those players who have faced them know very well how fierce their Medicham and Hariyama paring really is, making them the most experienced and challenging duo within the cave. However, despite the couple’s hardened exterior, their strategy message on the PokeNav simply says, “Our love lets us prevail”, suggesting to us that it is their strong underlying bond that has pushed them to become so strong.
5Ty & Sue (Pokemon Pearl & Diamond)
Anyone who has played through eitherPokemon Pearl or Pokemon Diamondbefore will know all about Route 209, a small woodland area packed full of trees, bridges, and so many trainers. It’s all too easy forunprepared trainers to find themselves rushing back to the Pokemon Centrewhen venturing into this area, but out of all the eager trainers that can be found across this narrow route, the biggest challenge comes from the duo found at the very end, Ty and Sue.
The duo’s Machop and Meditite are the highest-leveled Pokemon in the area and can easily cut down any Pokemon in the party that are already low on HP. There’s no doubt that many newPokemon PearlandPokemon Diamondplayers will find it hard to forget this intimidating duo, but what also makes them memorable is their dialogue, especially Ty’s line once they are finally beaten “I only have eyes for Sue. Maybe that’s why we lost?” suggesting that there may be some behind-the-scenes trouble between the two when it comes to battling together.
4Day-Care Couple (Pokemon Black & White)
The Day-Care Couple actually make an appearance in several of the games, but they are given a little more development inPokemon Black and Whitewhere they actually have a daughter who helps them out with the Day Care, along with other kids running around the area too.
When players first arrive at the Day Care along Route 3, they will only be able to place one Pokemon in the woman’s care, but after meeting her husband in Nimbasa City, they can thenstart breeding by giving them two Pokemonand leaving them there for a few days. In the previous games, many players would often use the Day Care just as a way to bolster up their team, but with GameFreak granting the couple a bit more personality and character, it helps to make the entire area feel more alive and realistic.
3Tandemaus (Pokemon Scarlet & Violet)
Tandemaus is technically two Pokemon classed as one, and the reason they are eligible for this is that, as thePokemon ScarletPokedex states, “The pair sticks together no matter what” with the two being virtually inseparable. It can be easy to think that these Pokemon are just friends initially, but once they evolve at level 25, they actually become a family of four, with the two parents now being much larger in size.

It’s true that there have been Pokemon in the past that are designed to represent a family dynamic, such as the relationship between Kangaskhan and its baby, but Tandemaus portrays this a lot better considering the fact that the whole family gets involved in each battle.
2Floaroma Town Couple (Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl)
Initially, this elderly couple found in a flower bed in Floaroma Town seems pretty normal, but when players talk to them, they will quickly realize that there is much more than meets the eye when it comes to these two. If the player already hasPokemon Sword and Shieldsave data on their account, the old man will pass them a Jirachi, while if they have data fromPokemon Let’s Go EeveeorLet’s Go Pikachu,the woman will hand over Mew.
Both of thesemythical Pokemon are incredibly strong and extremely rare to findin the other games, so when the couple says that they would love for the player to “take care” of them, it’s easy to begin questioning how exactly they got their hands on them in the first place. Some theories suggest that these two were once a fiercely competitive duo before they reached the Sinnoh region and were hunting for Pokemon to make them the strongest couple there ever was, and it’s this mysterious aura that has made them so captivating and memorable to fans.
1Honeymooners Yuu & Ami (Pokemon X & Y)
The Reflection Cave inPokemon X and Yis a jaw-dropping natural formation that trainers can admire up close for themselves before reaching the Third Gym, and while there are many trainers here who are also looking to hone their skills, one of the most difficult but also fun battles comes from the Honeymooners, Yuu and Ami, who are spending their romantic getaway exploringthe wonderful Kalos region.
This isn’t just any random couple though since they even have their own theme that plays when they approach the player, and also make an appearance in thePokemon Adventures X and Ychapter where they can be seen using a map to navigate Santalune City. It’s clear that GameFreak put a lot of effort into making this bubbly couple feel as fun and unique as possible, and they definitely succeeded, with the Honeymooners making a big impression upon their introduction.
