The Last of Usfinale premiered this past weekend on HBO, containing more hidden cameos tailor-made for fans of the video games. Yet for actress Melanie Lynskey, one appearance earlier in the series was more special, as it involved shooting her husband.
Lynskey starred in two episodes ofThe Last of Us, entries 4 and 5, playing Kathleen Coghlan, a resistance leader in Kansas City who complicates Joel and Ellie’s passing through the area in her quest to avenge her brother’s death by killing Henry. Kathleen was a completely original character added to the series by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, though the chain of events that led to her demise ultimately does recreate scenes from the game.

This was the scene where the New Zealander worked with her spouseonThe Last of Usset. In this case, her partner Jason Ritter doubled as one of the Clickers that emerge from the ground right when Kathleen wants to shoot Henry, Sam, and Ellie. Lynskey described theLast of Usscene onThe Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, even bringing with her a cute picture of Ritter landing a kiss on her cheek wearing that icky infected makeup.
Lynskey mentioned that Ritter, an accomplished actor in his own right, worked hard to train withThe Last of Us' stunt crew to become a Clicker. Considering the scale of the scene, it’s obvious why director Jeremy Webb needed as many bodies as possible. It wasThe Last of Usepisode 5, “Endure and Survive,” where fans were treated to the show’s reveal of its Bloater, and thus one of the biggest action sequences in season 1.
The Last of Usfeatured a lot of cameos, including those by Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, who voiced the game’s two protagonists, and both were met with a fantastic reception from fans. Funnily enough, while Lynskey and Ritter had their special moment in an action-packed sequence, some fans have voiced their displeasure with how little the infected come into play in the show.
Since Kathleen met her end in the scene she commented on, Lynskey won’t appear in season 2. However, that will hardly matter, as so manyThe Last of Usviewers are already wonderinghow the show will tackleThe Last of Uspart 2.
The Last of Usis available on HBO Max.
