Mortal Kombat 11fans will be excited to hear that instead of oneMortal Kombatfilm going into production, there are now two. A newMortal Kombatmovie has just been announced, an animated film to go alongside the currently in-production live-action film. The project’s name isMortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revengeand it will feature a broad selection ofMortal Kombat’s most popular fighters. The cartoon is set to release in the first half of 2020.

A good portion ofMortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’sRevenge’s cast has already been announced. Headlining will beCommunity’s  Joel McHale in the role ofJohnny Cage, alongsideDexter’s Jennifer Carpenter in the role of Sonya Blade. OtherMortal Kombatfighter confirmed for the film include Goro, Jax, Kano, Kitana, Liu Kang, Quan Chi, Raiden, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion, too. Scorpion’s name is in the title, after all. As for what kind of quality fans should expect fromMortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, the film’s being produced by the Warner Bros. Animation team. The producer is Rick Morales, best known for directing theBatman: Return of the Caped CrusaderandBatman vs. Two-Facefilms in 2016 and 2017. More recently, he’s produced severalLego Scooby-Doo!andLego DC Super Hero Girlsprojects. There’s a lot of experience behindMortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, but it’s not necessarily a theatrical-quality animated film.

Left un-detailed isMortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge’s story. Going off of the title, it would seem to imply a more focused story looking intoScorpion’s past. Yet the size of the cast shows that the story will do much more than focus on Scorpion alone. Scorpion’s backstory may simply be the main story thread of the film, but will expand beyond that as it goes along.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revengewill become the secondMortal Kombatfilmbeing currently developed. The other, simply namedMortal Kombat, will be a live-action martial arts film and is planned to be released in 2021. The film will serve as a reboot to the popular 1995Mortal Kombatfilm and its 1997 sequelAnnihilation. The film’s director is Simon McQuoid in his first feature film role.

It seems the success of theMortal Kombat 11video game is leading to a major cross-media push for the brand again in 2020 and beyond.
