Summary

There have been many exciting crossovers featured inDestiny 2, but the game’s most recent collaboration with theGhostbustersfranchise falls flat in comparison. To promoteGhostbusters: Frozen Empirehitting the big screen,Destiny 2has introduced some new items based around the long-running franchise, but the collaboration feels more confusing than exciting.

Plenty of crossovers have come to Destiny 2 in the past. However, a lot of these crossovers have revolved around other popular games or properties that fitDestiny 2’s tone. One of the game’s mostrecent crossovers withMass Effectturned out to be one of the best collaborations yet, setting the bar high for the future. Unfortunately, the newestGhostbustersfeature doesn’t reach this bar.

Ghostbusters Feels Out Of Place In Destiny 2

Previous crossovers haven’t exactly matchedDestiny 2when it comes to genre, but they still make more sense over all. In addition to the recentMass Effectcrossover, items and skins inspired bygames likeThe WitcherandAssassin’s Creedhave been added toDestiny 2. Although these titles differ in many ways, the general tone remains similar, which helps make the crossovers feel natural.

A Forced Collaboration

When it comes down to it,Destiny 2’sGhostbusterscollaboration feels forced. Although it’s an interesting way to try and drum up interest in a movie’s release,Destiny 2isn’t the right game to do it with. Back in 2020,FortniteandGhostbusterscame togetherfor a crossover, and that felt far more natural given howFortniteis home to a much wider range of crossover content. Additionally, bothGhostbustersandFortniteare more lighthearted in tone, so the two franchises coming together made perfect sense. It’s surprising thatGhostbustersdidn’t return toFortnitein order to promote the film, because theGhostbustersskins were quite popular, andFortnitecould have featured some fun in-game events.

Destiny 2simply isn’t the right target for aGhostbustersfeature. Not only does the crossover feel forced, but there isn’t much content to be desired anyway. There are only three items that players can get, and that ultimately feels like a misfire.

Though the few items that are available are quite cool, especially the Sparrowinspired by the movie’s villain, the problem lies with the crossover just not feeling likeDestiny 2. One of the biggest letdowns of this team-up is that there aren’t any special armor sets that take inspiration from the iconic ghosts and characters withinGhostbusters. While these hypothetical armor sets would not have made the crossover feel any more natural, they would have at least made it more exciting.

Future Destiny 2 Crossovers Can Learn From This Mistake

When it comes to futureDestiny 2crossovers based around movie promotions, Bungie may want to be more careful with which franchises the game teams up with. AlthoughGhostbustersis a fun and iconic franchise, it just isn’tDestiny 2. If Bungie wanted to collaborate with a movie that felt more in theme withDestiny 2and its tone, items and skins inspired byDunecould have been fun to see brought to life.

It was an interesting attempt to promoteGhostbusters: Frozen EmpireinDestiny 2, but it unfortunately, it feels misplaced. One of the best features ofDestiny 2is the awesome skins players can get for their Guardians, and failing to add anyGhostbusters-inspired armor ornaments is a big missed opportunity. Overall, the crossover seems to feel like an afterthought when it could have been one ofDestiny 2’s more unique collaborations.
