World of Warcraft: Dragonflightbrings with it a new, clean, and sleek user interface that an essential addon elevates even further. Having launchedWorld of Warcraftin November 2004, Blizzard Entertainment was content to let players update their user interface through unofficial addons for the past eighteen years. WithDragonflightheralding anew era for theWarcraftsaga, the developers saw a perfect opportunity to modernize this neglected aspect of the game and bring it into the present.

For the better part of the past decade,World of Warcraftremained in an unconventional position as one of the largest MMOs that simply could not be played without any community-made addons. Basic functionality and convenience such as a unified inventory bag was locked behind these unofficial creations, and though this undoubtedly painted a picture of complacency on Blizzard’s part, it was in fact a stroke of genius. By relegating certain quality of life features to community upkeep, addon culture thrived at an unprecedented level forWorld of Warcraft, and its passionate existence played a pivotal role in maintaining the game’s longevity.

TheDragonflightpre-patch launchsaw the live servers be introduced to a brand-new user interface, and Nora the Destroyer on Reddit noticed that the Mechagon Edition of Clean Icons fit the newly redrawn action bar art perfectly. Memorable though they may be, the old icons are nearly two decades old, and have started to show their age when contrasted againstDragonflight’s default user interface, especially on larger monitors.

The addon by AcidWeb uses AI up-scaling technology to increase the fidelity of the old icons while faithfully preserving the original art behind them. The collection is all-encompassing, as it covers icons fromraces and classes inWorld of Warcraft, to all the individual spells and even equipment. AcidWeb went on record to say that the addon would be updated as new content comes along, with the current version already prepared forDragonflight.

Though the addon only has value in a visual sense, the way it complements the new action bars should make it a lightweight mainstay for mostWorld of Warcraftplayerswho want to stick with a default look for their user interface. Community reception for the overhaul has largely been positive, with many players praising the ability to combine their bags. Despite the fact thatDragonflightmay have made some addons redundant, the addon community as a whole will always have a place inWorld of Warcraft.

World of Warcraftis available now for PC.Dragonflightlaunches on November 28.
