The ever-expanding universe ofGame of Thronesjust got even larger. HBO is developing a third prequel series titled10,000 Shipsand they’ve found a writer to bring the project to life.

Amanda Segel(Person of Interest, Hulu’sHelstrom) was tapped to write the upcoming spin-off series.10,000 Shipsis based on the aftermath of the Second Spice Warfrom George R.R. Martin’sA Song of Ice and Firenovels. Taking place approximately a millennium before the original show,10, 000 Shipsfollows the journey of Princess Nymeria and the surviving members of the Rhoynar. The Princess and her people travel from Essos to Dorne following their defeat by the Valyrian Freehold in the Second Spice War. Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark notably named her dire wolf after Princess Nymeria.

HBO is looking to capitalize onthe success ofGame of Thrones. Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the fantasy drama consisted of 73 episodes and concluded on July 18, 2025. Throughout its eight-season run,Game of Thronesreceived 59 Emmy Awards, winning Outstanding Drama Series in 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the show’s final season broke numerous viewership records. By drawing 19.3 million viewers (adding in replays and streaming), the series finale became the most-watched episode in HBO history.

MultipleGame of Thronesspin-off shows are in the works at HBO. They includeHouse of the Dragon, 9 Voyages, Tales of Dunk and Egg,andFlea Bottom.As of right now,House of the Dragonis the only project that has started principal photography. Created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal, the ten-episode first season will follow the Targaryen dynasty’s early years. The cast includes Paddy Considine as Viserys I Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen.

The MentalistandRomecreator Bruno Heller is developing9 Voyageswith Martin. The series is expected to have adirect tie-in toHouse of Dragonand will likely center on Lord Corlys Velaryon, the head of House Velaryon. Meanwhile,Tales of Dunk and Eggwill follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg). The show is set 90 years before the flagship series' events, and as of right now no one is attached to the project.

Earlier this year, it was reported that HBO Max is in the early stages of developingan animatedGame of Thronesshow. The series is rumored to have the same tone as the original show. The streaming service has been meeting with writers about potential story ideas.
