The highly-anticipated addition into the DC Universe,The Batman, will feature the origin story of one of Gotham’s most beloved characters, Catwoman. Zoe Kravitz, who plays the role of Catwoman in the upcoming film, will accompany Batman (Robert Pattinson) as he fights back against the corruption in Gotham city and tries to take down the crafty serial killer known as the Riddler (Paul Dano).

Catwoman is well known as a stealthy, sensual, and fearsome fighter. Many actresses have taken onthe role of Catwomanover the years, such as Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt, Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry, so it is clear that Kravitz has some big shoes to fill and high expectations to meet. When preparing for the role inThe Batman, Kravitz worked hard to study the movements of her character and found that watching footage of animals in nature was the way to do this.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, Kravitz opened up about how she and her stunt coordinator, Rob Alonzo, used the videos for her physical training. “We watched cats and lions and how they fight and talked about what is actually possible when you’re my size,” she expressed.Catwoman moves with calculated and precise steps, in contrast to other superheroes who are impulsive and brash with their actions. Kravitz found it important to take into account Catwoman’s abilities and emotional state, to not stretch the character past her limit. She said, “[Rob]’s not just trying to do a bunch of impressive backflips that wouldn’t be possible for that person to do, and he takes into account where we are in the story and where the characters are emotionally.”

Kravitz, who will depictan unestablished Selina Kyleand transform into Catwoman, believes studying these actions is important for the growth of the character. “This is an origin story for Selina. So, it’s the beginning of her figuring out who she is, beyond just someone trying to survive. I think there’s a lot of space to grow and I think we are watching her become what I’m sure will be the femme fatale," she explained.

Director ofThe Batman, Matt Reeves, wants to keep the iconic things about Catwoman that is understood from the comics but also desires to give the audience something they have not seen before. Speaking last year about the latest depiction of the character, Reeves said, “It’s always about trying to square what you know with what also is new."

Reeves has kept anambiguous air surroundingThe Batmanand its characters, having just released a new motion poster of Pattinson in full suit and recently revealing that the character of Batman was inspired by the late musician, Kurt Cobain. It is clear that Kravitz’s Catwoman is not going to be the only surprise, as every character in this film seems to be depicted in a way people have never seen before.

While there have been many different versions of Batman, in both movies and television, this film is something that has everyone eager and on the edge of their seats. With an all star cast and a 100 million dollar budget, this film sounds like something to look forward to.
